SafetyFast! Notes – Sept 16

It hasn’t been a bad summer plenty of opportunity for top-down motoring in reasonable weather. Our summer picnic was held on July 10 at Barrington Court near Illminster in Somerset. The National Trust had allowed us to sue the quadrangle in front of the house for parking, where the 21 cars attending made a fine sight.

We had a few interlopers by the way of one Porsche and two TVRs, but the majority of Club members used their MGs which ranged from T Types, Y Type, A,B,C, Midget and MGFs. Barrington Court is well worth a visit, being the first property acquired by the National Trust in 1907, and the Trust making us very welcome this year. Thanks to Dave Heath and Alan Diamond for organising the visit.

If your interests include aircraft then you should have been at Cotswold Airport on July 24, when Tony Blake arranged for us to attend the inaugural meeting of the BullPup Flyers, whose ethos matches that of MGCC: encouraging members to use their machines in a social and competitive way, with technical backup and good camaraderie. A good time was had by all, the highlight being the mass flypast in the afternoon. We wait to see if this becomes a permanent fixture on our calendar, but thanks to Tony for his hard work organising it.

As I write this MGs on Grass 2 is about to happen. You will have missed it for this year, but I am sure that all participants will have excelled themselves thrashing around a non-damaging field. This is true grassroots motorsport, if you’ve never been, put it in your diary for next year. You don’t know what you’re missing.

The Centre is gearing up for our major event of the year at Wiscombe Park near Honiton on September 10. Being a speed hillclimb, entering as a competitor may be a bit daunting and expensive, as racing overalls and helmet etc are needed, but it is also a good social gathering, as the setting is spectacular with wonderful views of the Devon countryside. The best view is always from the marshals’ post. To offer your services contact Jon Pittard at jon.pittard@btinternet.com.

Details are still being finalised for the Centre’s 80th Anniversary run on October 9. Keep watching the website for more information – should be a good one!
