SafetyFast! Notes – Dec 16

South West Centre Anniversary Run

This was a social run to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the South West Centre. There were three separate starting points, Portishead, Togg Hill and the Haynes Motor Museum, so those attending could choose their preferred start venue with each route providing a scenic drive to finish by Chew Valley Lake for lunch. Sue and I decided to start from Portishead on the promenade in the TC and we were blessed with a beautiful sunny morning. We had a very enjoyable drive via Clevedon and the Cheddar Gorge en route to the very popular Chew Lake. Over 30 MGs took part and, as befitting an 80th anniversary, the models ranged from Dave Mothersdill’s 18/80, several MMM and T Types, a Y saloon, MGA, MGB, MGC and Midgets. The later cars were also represented with several MGF/TF, RV*s and our centre chairman’s MG Metro Turbo. All in an excellent turnout and many thanks to Neil and Oliver Lock for organising a most enjoyable event.

Kimber Car Trial

This was held at the usual venue outside Chew Stoke and 15 competitors took part. However there were only five MGs. The weather was fine although there had been rain in the early morning, but the hills gradually dried out.

John York took the award for the best MG and George Ward with wife Jo in the passenger seat took the best pre-1955 award in their PA. Grateful thanks are due to Jim Lott for organising and to all those who helped to set up the hills the day before and marshalled on the day. Without marshals and the work prior to events these meetings would not take place.

The South West Centre Dinner and Presentation of Awards will be held on the evening of Saturday February 25 at Limpley Stoke Hotel near Bath. Your committee makes no apology for returning to this venue as the hotel staff always look after us very well.

Finally one of our major events, the Kimber Classic Trial will be held on Saturday May 13.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year.
