The Terry Davies Memorial Wye Valley Social Run 2022

22 May @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

This years event, following of the untimely passing of the previous organiser, Terry Davies, has been renamed the Terry Davies Memorial Wye Valley Social Run.  I will be collecting donations to pass on to Behcets UK, Terry’s chosen charity.
The venue chosen for the picnic is Goodrich Castle.  I spoke to Freda when I had arranged the venue and she said that they had organised a run there some years ago, so it would be good to go back.  Freda also informed me that Terry was, at that time, in Hereford hospital and had been there for some time.

For those members who live South of the River Severn and would like to take part in the run, there will be a suggested route from Severn View (Aust) services on the M48 and I will be pleased to meet you at the services at around 9:30 am onwards to set off at 10:00 to take in a scenic route to Goodrich Castle.   The Suggested route can be viewed and downloaded by clicking here.

We will be hoping to arrive at the castle between 11:00 and 11:30.  If other members local to the Castle also arrange to get to the Castle at this time I would be grateful.  The Castle has a small Cafe to purchase food (a sample menu is available here Goodrich Castle Sample Menu ) or you can bring you own picnic.

Information on the castle, which is administered by English Heritage, has been provided below.

Group Visit Admission Prices
For groups of 11 or more paying visitors we offer a discounted group rate, if one person is paying for the entire group. English Heritage members, coach drivers and tour leaders do not count towards the group total. One coach driver and one tour leader also receive free entry.

As you will see from our online resources, differential pricing has been introduced at Goodrich. Group rates in May 2022 will be £7.65 for adults and £6.88 for concessions. Concessions are anyone over 65 years+, jobseekers with relevant ID and students with student cards.

For more information about our group booking rates, please click on the link to see our online resources: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/group-visits/resources/

Exclusive Tour Optional Extra
We offer an exclusive tour option for groups which is a guidebook and guided tour combination at an additional £4.50 per person. One of our team members will guide you round the castle and its history, lasting approximately one hour. Exclusive tours must be booked in advance and a minimum of 11 people are required for this option.

Catering
We have a small café with limited indoor seating so I am afraid we are not able to reserve café seating for groups. However if you can provide information on your catering requirements and any dietary requirements within the group ahead of your visit, at least one week before, we can be prepared so your group are not left disappointed on the day. I recommend our cream tea with our homemade scones as a lovely refreshment option for your group.  A sample menu can be downloaded here Goodrich Castle Sample Menu  If you have any special dietary requirements, please let Jim Lott know before Thursday 19th May so that he can pass on the message to let the cafe know.

Access
For more information about access to the castle please see our website. If you have questions about access of the castle please let me know and I would be happy to provide more information. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/goodrich-castle/plan-your-visit/access/

The Site Manager at the Castle is reserving a section of the lower car park for our group to park together, the trees around the car park will offer a nice backdrop for any photographs. They will try to keep a look out for the first cars arriving to point them in the right direction.  There are a handful of additional spaces in the upper car park for disabled parking but not enough space to park all the cars.

The usual car parking fee is £3 and free of charge for English Heritage members. For this occasion, they are happy to offer a special one-time deal for our group whereby they will refund the car parking fee for any of our MG Car Club members who spend £5 or more in the café on Sunday 22nd May. To apply the deal in the cafe, provide the car park ticket (that has been displayed on the dash of the car) and car registration number when ordering at the till to receive the refund.

If you are intending to either join at the picnic or travel from Severn View Services, could you let me know please (jim.lott@hotmail.co.uk) or mobile 07773491953.  Then I can give rough numbers to the venue so they can allocate parking.

Hi Barry, yes that is fine. Once we get to the Castle your time is your own. I have just updated the Route document to include the Parking information. There is a £3.00 charge for parking (free to English Heritage Members) however they will refund the £3.00 if £5.00 or more is spent in the cafe. Details on the Website and route plan.
