SafetyFast! Notes – Jun 2016

When I penned these notes three months ago I opened with a few words about the serious amount of work which was long overdue on my wife’s well-used MGB GT. Most of the winter has been spent cutting out rot and welding in new panels but I am pleased to report that the body shell has now been resprayed in its original Harvest Gold by our local garage and they have done an excellent job.

The one competitive event that took place during last month was the Kimber Classic Trialon Saturday April 9. This is one of the Centre’s largest events and we enjoyed an excellent entry of 42 cars of which only three were post 1960! The oldest car was an 18/80 and there were no fewer than 23 MMM cars entered, seven T Types and what a fantastic sight they made. The rest of the MG entry consisted of an MGA, three midgets and one MGB GT. Two Cream Cracker ex works trials cars, a P Type and T Type were entered and the non MG was also very interesting with two Austin Seven grasshoppers, two Austin Seven Ulsters, two Dellows anda Model A Ford. At the start at the Lanes Hotel near Yeovil, the sun shone but unfortunately this was short lived and the promised rain soon came. Together with the heavy rains over the previous weeks, this meant two hills had to be cancelled. Space prevents listing all the winners but results are published on our website. Finally many thanks are due to Bruce Weston, Clerk of the Course assisted by Alan Grassam, and all those who turned out to marshal.

As regards to future events, there is of course the Club’s largest event, MGLive! at Silverstone on June 4-5. The South West Centre is responsible for running the California Cup Autotests on the Saturday morning, and the volunteers to marshal would be very welcome.

The Classic Car Show at Shepton Mallet takes place over the weekend of June 12-13 and as usual we will have a stand. The show is not to be missed and please come along and see us on our stand. Better still please volunteer to assist on the stand for part of the weekend. Volunteers should contact Jim Lott on chairman@mgccsw.com

The MGs on Grass 2 autotest at Claverham were originally scheduled for June 26, but these will now take place on Sunday 31 July due to the organiser’s holiday commitments.

Finally our Midsummer Social Run takes place on Sunday July 10 near Illminster
