Chairman’s Notes 20 June 2018

A report on the Car Club Events that have taken place since my last Chairman’s Notes: –

South West Centre Members 50 Years of Car Club Membership

This year five South West Members were presented with Car Club badges to celebrate being members for 50 years.  The presentation was made at at Kimber House on 19th April.  The five were; Bruce Weston, John Bird, Alan Grassam, Peter Jones and Andrew Owst.

The Wye Valley Social run 20th May 2018

10 cars set off from the Severn View Services and made their way to Croft Castle near Leominster via a route following the River Wye as far as Hereford.  Several cars joined us on route and eventually we had 20 cars at the Castle.  Room in front of the Castle was limited to 10 cars and the remainder were in the car park.  Most people bought a picnic and the weather was gorgeous so we sat on the grass and had a convivial lunch.  A trip around the Castle was very interesting and the gardens were stunning.  Thanks to Terry and Freda Davies who organised the venue and Simon Lott who devised the route we followed.  The photo below shows  the cars parked in front of the Castle.

California Cup Team 2nd June 2018

The Centre entered a team in the California Cup Autotest at MG Live! this year.  The team consisted of Jim Lott & Mike Angwin, both in MGFs and Mike Beecher in an MG ZS 180.  Unfortunately we did not win but we did not come last either!  Well done to the Ulster and Lincolnshire teams who did win the major prizes.  The photo below shows the team.

Bristol Classic Car Show 16 & 17th June 2018

Once again the Centre had a stand at this prestigious Car Show.  The South West Centre has had a stand at the show since it started when it was held in Bristol.  For several years now the show has been held at the Bath and West Showground at Shepton Mallet and this year was no exception.  However the last couple of years has seen the size of the show diminishing and there were several spaces in the halls where there are normally more cars on display.  Our stand is built to look like pits from a bygone era and does look very smart, however we missed out on the stand prize this year (having won 3rd prize last year).  We did, however, pick up the Best Classic Sports car award with Dave Jacobs stunning White 1958 MGA Coupe.  In fact we have either won or had runner up in this category for the last 4 years all with MGAs!  Special thanks go to Dave Mothersdill, Andrew Owst and Bruce Weston for assistance in setting up the stand.  Thanks also to Neil Lock (MG ZR), Kingsley Beck (MG Midget), Dave Jacobs (MGA Coupe) and Bruce Weston (MG TC) for the loan of their cars for the display.  Special thanks to Tony and Val Blake and Simon Lott for helping to man the stand on Saturday and John Bird and John Barnacott for manning the stand on Sunday.

The photos below show the stand and Dave Jacobs with his trophy.
