SafetyFast! Notes – Apr 2016

The year in the South West started with the annual dinner on February 27, when some 70 members and guests sat down to a three course meal at the Limpley Stoke Hotel near Bath. We were joined by competitors in the Luffield Speed Championship with the intention of having a joint prize giving. This failed to materialise as embarrassingly the car bring the Speed Championship awards broke down on the M25 and we had a prize giving without prizes! We were pleased to welcome Club Chairman Ian Quarrington as a guest, enabling members to get up to date with happenings within the main club.

After an enjoyable meal most of the assembled guests gravitated to the bar, where by chance the Loughborough Operatic Soceity had taken up residence as they were also staying in the hotel. A lively and loud evening ensued, spontaneous renditions of all songs from sea shanties to arias ringing around the room for some hours. We called it a night at about 1am, however there was talk of the night finally winding up well after 4! There were a few sore heads at breakfast, many members taking advantage of the idyllic scenery and fine weather for a sobering walk along the river bank.

This year’s competitive season is about to commence with the Kimber Classic Trial on April 9. Starting at the Lanes Hotel in West Coker near Yeovil, the trial covers a distance of 80 miles through very scenic countryside with a dozen special sections to provide a competitive element to the day. With a lunch stop in a country hostelry and great comradery this is an excellent day out, either as a competitor or as a marshal. All offers of help would be welcomed by Bruce Weston, any late entries to Andrew Owst, full contact details and more information available as ever on the Centre’s website.

May sees us again encouraging grass roots motorsport and a scenic drive with MGs on Grass and the Wye Valley Social run on the 7th and 15th respectively. Both events are suitable for all MGs and the emphasis as always on enjoying the company of fellow enthusiasts in your car. Again check the website to get entry forms, event organiser contact details etc. Hope to see you at an event soon!
